No.5933052, Lance Corporal George Arthur SAYERS
Aged 28
George Arthur Sayers was born in 1913 in Reading (Reading Q2-1913 2C:736)), son of Charles William and
Georgina Esther SAYERS (née BROCKHURST).
His Dullingham connection has not yet been found. His regimental number indicates enlistment the same week as many local men. CWGC have his parents address as East Lavington, Sussex. In the 1939 register his father [9-5-1880] a groom in racing stables; mother [21-5-1888] were at Old Park Stud, Midhurst, Sussex so conceivably the family had lived in the Newmarket area at some time, perhaps in Dullingham. The stud was inherited by Mrs McDonald Buchanan, the family also owning Lordship and Egerton Studs in Newmarket |
The 1st Cambridgeshires were active in the Adam Park Estate, near Sime Road on the 14th. The Cambridgeshires (1st and 2nd Battalion and the 4th and 5th Suffolks were still fighting, and holding their ground, on the 15th February when, the order came to lay down their arms and surrender to the Japanese. |
