Stanley Frank Ward was born in Monks Eleigh on 30th May 1895 (Cosford Q3-1895 4A:773), son of Frank Percy and Louisa Elizabeth WARD (née GAGE).
He was admitted to Monks Eleigh Voluntary School on 23rd April 1900 and left on 15th November 1900 1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Water Mill, Fornham St Martin with his father Frank P. WARD [28] miller/baker; his mother Louisa [28]; uncles Charles GAGE [17] (butcher) and Robert GAGE [14] baker's apprentice. All were born in Monks Eleigh. 1911 census...Aged 15, miller's apprentice, he was still in Fornham St Martin with his parents, sister Dorothy [9] born Fornham St Martin and uncle Charles GAGE (now a miller). |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The war diary has :- LOOS 14 BIS 22-9-16 to 25-9-16 - Batt relieves 2nd Suffolks in the R Sub section. A few casualties during relief - communication trenches not dug deep enough. Trenches in bad condition - little work had been done on them. Fairly quiet- casualties caused by rifle grenades. Casualties during tour 3 O.R.killed, 14 O.R. wounded, most of them slight.
