Garrard Clutton HEMMINGS was born in 1918 (Chesterton Q1-1918 3B:563) in son of William Broadsmith and Anabella HEMMINGS (née CLUTTON). Married Barbara Joan SLADE (Witney Q2-1942 3A:4879). Their daughter Julia S was born in Witney in 1944

In the 1939 register his parents were at 7 Annandale Road, Croydon, father [29-11-1874] master builder, mother [12-1-1876] and sister Marjorie [12-10-1905] a hairdresser, later Mrs Phull-Anscombe.

A tenuous Gazeley connection but as she is recorded in Gazeley after her husband's death it maybe that they lived here, Barbara returning to Witney just for the birth if their child.


25/8/1941 appointed Flying Officer - 24/8/1942 appointed Flight Lieutenant - ex 582 Squadron, posted to 156 Squadron - 20/6/1944 appointed Acting Squadron Leader

156 Squadron were part of the Pathfinder Force.
Avro Lancaster MkIII, ser.no.ND444 c/s GT-G took off from RAF Upwood at 22:04 for a raid on Russelheim, one of the two aircraft that failed to return of the ten from 156 squadron. Nothing was heard from aircraft after takeoff The crew were all buried initially in Daleiden Cemetery ( near the Luxemburg/German border about 20 miles NE of Bastogne) and moved to Reichswald Forest in 1947.

The crew were:- S/Ldr Hemmings (pilot); F/O Richards (Nav); F/O Taylor (2nd Nav); F/Sgt Seddon (Visual Marker); Sgt Green (Fl.Engineer); F.Sgt Pye (Wireless Op); F/O Hill (Air Gumn); P/O Stone (Air Gun); F/O Hazard (?).
