Ernest William Bishop was born in Great Barton in 1891 (1st qtr 1891 Thingoe 4a:757) son of Thomas and Alice BISHOP (née LONG)

1891 census...Aged 4 months, he was at 2 Conyers Green, Great Barton, with his father Thomas BISHOP [39] farm labourer; his kmother Alice [37]; brothers James [15] and Alffred G [14] both farm labourers, Robert [5]Herbert H [3] and Walter C [2]; sisters Bessie [9] and Emma [7]. All were born in Great Barton.

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Conyers Green, Great Barton with his father Thomas BISHOP (now horse keeper on farm; his mother Alice;; sisters Bessie [19], Kate [7] and Agnes [9 months]; brothers Robert [15], Herbert [13], Walter [11] and Thomas [5]. All were born in Great Barton.

1911 census...Aged 20, he was still at Conyers Green with his parents, sister Kate; brothers Alfred [32], Herbert, and Thomas. All the brothers were farm labourers.



He married Mabel Elizabeth LONG in Ashley on 13th December 1913. On the pension card his widow and children were at Elm, nr Wisbech. She subsequently married Frederick CROUCH in 1919 in Wisbech

His brother Herbert was killed in 1916 on the Somme, in the Suffolk Regiment see here


He attested on 10th November 1915 in Norwich and was mobilised into the Royal Garrison Artillery at Dover on 13th May 1916. He gave his age as 24 years 11 months, a married groom, residing at 28 Denmark Street, Diss, Norfolk. Height 5 feet 8 inches, chest 36 to 38.5 inches. Wife Mabel Elizabeth (née LONG) who he married at Ashley Church on 13th December 1913 (she subsequently remarried Frederick CROUCH). Two children, Ernest Walter born 26th April 1914 in Great Barton, George Robert born 3rd June 1915 in Diss.

His personal belongings, returned to his widow (at Redmoor Villa, Elm nr Wisbech) were:- letters, postcards, photos, pipe bowl, 2 religious books, purse, 1d stamp, coins, cigsrette case, pouch, safety razor, nail clippers and a broken wrish watch. Also 30 francs which was credited to his pay account.


An 8 inch howitzer, the type used by 145 Siege battery at the time Each gun would have had 20 RGA personnel per gun in total, plus ten ASC drivers per gun for the transport.
