Robert Martin Mayhew was born in Ashfield Thorpe (2nd qtr 1881 Bosmere and Clydon 4a:685), son of Martin and Sarah MAYHEW(née PARKER)

1881 census...Aged 5 days, he was at Thorpe Road, Ashfield with his father Martin MAYHEW [27] farm labourer born Ballisforde; his mother Sarah [24] born Ashfield Thorpe

1891 census...Aged 10, he was at Halfway Houses, Kettleburgh with his parents (mother now recorded as born Kenton); brother Herbert John[5] born Ashfield.

1901 census...Aged 19, a pantry boy, he was at the Colonial Agricultural College, Hollesley nr Woodbridge. His parents and brother Herbert were still in Kettleburgh.

He married Alice Emily JAY [16-8-1888] in 1904.

1911 census...Aged 30. a horseman, he was at The Lodge, Black Notley with his wife Alice and daughter Alice [3]. There had been 3 children but one had died. Confusingly, the pension card has daughters Gertrude Ethel [10-5-1905] and Gladys Emily [11-4-1908] but no Alice ( perhaps this should be Gladys). A son, James William born and died 1907.

Their third daughter, Winifred Ada was born on 28th May 1911 and their son Frederick Augustus on 6th April 1914.

On the pension card his widow was at 1 New Cottage, East Barton, while CWGC have her at Rectory Cottage, Kettleburgh, Suffolk.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
In the night of 8th/9th June 1917 the enemy attempted a raid, but were beaten off. Robert's was the only death
