Charles John Prentice was born on 10th November 1889 in Old Buckenham, Norfolk (4th qtr 1889 Guiltcross 4b:243) son of Henry and Mary Ann PRENTICE (née CARTER) Baptised in Old Buckenham on 3rd August 1890

1891 census...Aged 1,he was at Abbey Road, Old Buckenham with his father Henry PRENTICE[36] farm labourer born Kenninghall; his mother Mary Ann [32] born Fressingfield; brothers Henry [8] and William [6]. The three brothers all born in Old Buckenham.

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Braking Close, Great Barton with his parents; brothers Henry (farm labourer), William (yardman) and Eber [6]; sisters Hannah [8] and Emma [4]

1911 census...Aged 22, he was a Private in the 15th Hussars in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa. At Church Cottages, Great Barton were his parents; sisters Hannah H, Emma Louisa annd Dorothy Edith [4]; brothers Eba and George [6]. The three youngest all born in Great Barton

He married Amy TINSON [5-4-1893] in 1914. Their son Charles George was born 31st August 1914

On the pension card his widow was at Waterbridge, Hessett, moving to 13 Berryfield Road, Walworth, London, having married William James YOUNG in 1920



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. It seems his relatives failed to claim the clasp to his 1914 Star.
8th Aug - 03:30 arrived concentration are east of Longeau. Traffic had delayed them. 15th Hussar with 4 MG and a squadron from 8th Hussars had to clear a cavalry track through the wire beyond the original British line. By 11 am 15th Hussars were in GUILLAUCOURT. They pressed foward and when eventually relieved by the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade, they settled in a valley by CAIX for the night. Difficulty in finding water for the horses.
