Charles William Rowell was born in 1878 (3rd qtr 1878 Guisborough 9d:522), son of Josseph and ROWELL (née LEE)

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Railway Cottages, Cut Flat Lane, Marske with his father Joseph ROWELL [29] railway labourer born Littleport; his mother Hannah [29] born Powick, Worcs; brothers Henry [4] born Saltburn and Arthur [8 months] born Marske.

1891 census...Aged 12, the same family were still at Marske with an extra brother Albert [3]. His mother died in Yorkshire in 1896 and father married Maria MILLER in 1900 in Ely

1901 census...Aged 22, he was a Private in the Suffolk Regiment in Bury St.Edmunds (recorded as born Littleport). His father (now foreman at coal wharf) and step mother with brother Albert were east side of Market Place, Ely

1911 census...Aged 32, he was a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in barracks in Aldershot. His father, step mother and brother Thomas [20] born Marske, were in Market Street,Ely

He married Esther Muriel ESTLEA in 1914.

His brother in law Percy Eastlea was killed in Belgium in 1915 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds and died in Colchester Military Hospital from influenza and pleurisy contracted on active service on 27th April 1920. The right hand medal is his Long Service and Good Conduct medal. Documentation for any pre 1914 medals has not been found





Charles Rowell is buried in Great Barton (Holy Innocents) churchyard NW boundary
