Frederick John Pettitt was born in 1893 (4th qtr 1893 Bury St. Edmunds 4a:736), son of John and Kezia PETTITT(née PASKE)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at 15 Tollgate Lane, Bury St. Edmunds with his father [35] domestic groom/gardener born Sicklesmere; his mother Kezia [32] born Welnetham; sister Hilda [5] and brother Reginald [2] both born Bury St. Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 17, a postman, he was at "The Victoria Inn", Great Welnetham, with his father John Pettitt, [46] innkeeper born Great Welnetham; mother Kezia [40] born Great Welnetham; sister Hilda [15] and brother Reginald [12], both born in Bury St. Edmunds and Leslie [3] born Sicklesmere.

On the pension card his mother was at Sicklesmere, and after her death, his father was still in Sicklesmere.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds

The war diary for 25th march 1918 has :-
BAILLY...Orders received to form a composite regiment from R.Scots Greys, 12th Lancers and 20th Hussars, each Regt to find 90 mounted men, Lt.Col. C FANE, CMG, DSO to command... .....Regt marched to PONTOISE in support to 18th Division, at 7:15 am received orders to march to CHIRY and hold up enemy who were advancing from NOYON. Arrived at CHIRY 10 am and received orders to hold high ground MT RENAUD. Squadron 20th Hussars took up position dismounted.

The battalion had 3 killed that day.
