WEBB, Harry James

No.12095, Private, Harry James WEBB
Aged 21

7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on 8th July 1916

Harry James Webb was born in Lawshall (2nd qtr 1895 Sudbury 4a:765), son of Frederick and Kate WEBB (née MOSS)

1901 census...Aged 6, James was "near the school", Bradfield St.Clare with his father Frederick WEBB [37] horsekeeper born Lawshall; his mother Kate [35] born Lawshall; brothers William [13] born Hawstead, John [9] born Hawstead and Dennis [1] born Lawshall; sisters Beatrice [12] born Lawshall and Bessy [4] born Stanstead.

1911 census...Aged 16, Harry, a farm worker, was at Cottage Farm, Bury Road, Bradfield Combust with his parents; brothers William and John (farm workers), Dennis, Robert [7] and Albert [4] both born in Bradfield St.Clare; sisters Bessie and Cissie [8] born Bradfield St.Clare. All 9 siblings survive.

On the pension card his mother was at Low Green, Welnetham.

He enlisted in Ixworth. He died at No.38 Casualty Clearing Station, Heilly L'Abbe, France.
The 7th Suffolks took part on 3rd July in a frontal assault on Ovillers and suffered very severe casualties. It is assumed that this is where and when Harry was wounded.

One puzzle is that the Bury Free Press refers him as a Fornham St. Martin man, but he is not on their war memorial, in the 1911 census he was in Bradfield Combust, but not on their memorial. He is on the Great Welnetham roll, and the only mention seen in any documents that mention Welnetham is his pension card which places his mother there.
