Henry Arthur Woodgate was born in Great Welnetham (3rd qtr 1890 Thingoe 4a: 701), son of William and Harriett Frances WOODGATE (née MORTLOCK)

1891 census...Aged 9 Months, he was at Osborne's Cottages, Great Welnetham with his father William WOODGATE [27] gardener; his mother Harriett H [23] born Hawstead; brother Frederick W [3]. All except his mother were born in Great Welnetham. His mother died in 1893

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Westrope's Cottage, Great Welnetham with his widower father ( now farm labourer) and brother Frederick W (labourer). All now recorded as born Sicklesmere. Housekeeper Mary MATTHOLI [40] and her daughters Ethel V.W. MATTHOLI [2] and Victoria M W [10 months] all three recorded as born Sicklesmere

1911 census...Aged 20, farm labourer, he was at Hawstead Lane, Sicklesmere with his father, brother Frederick, housekeeper Mary Mattholi and her 2 daughters

On the pension card his father was at Hawstead Lane, Great Welnetham.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
One other member of his company died that day. No war diary has been found, but they were on the Somme.
