Owen Batten was born in Great Wratting (Risbridge Q2-1919 4A:1162), son of Allen T and Rosa BATTEN (née JOHNSON). His father was single, a blacksmith living in Swaffham Bulbeck in 1911 census, marrying Rosa JOHNSON later in 1911. His mother died in 1936 and his widowefather [21-5-1888] a blacksmith, was living at Little Corner, Balsham in 1939) married again in 1941 to Frances M EMERY.
Owen Batten has not been found in the 1939 register, presumably due to his being in the Army.

The 5th Green Howards had left Ypres on 29th May and were a few miles east of Dunkirk on 31st May, 1940. Owen was killed the same day as 5 others of his battalion (2 buried with him on Houtem.)
