Horace Race was born in 1885 in Hargrave (4th qtr 1885 Thingoe 4a:661) son of Anna RACE.

1891 census...Aged 5, he was "adjacent to Grove Farm", Hargrave with his grandfather George RACE [61] farm labourer born Ousden; grandmother Frances [60]; mother Anna RACE [29]. All except his grandfather were born in Hargrave

1901 census...Aged 15, the same family unit were still in same place, but now it is his grandmother recorded as born in Ousden.

1911 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was at Bury Road, Hargrave with his widowed grandmother and his mother.

On the pension card his mother was still in Hargrave



He enlisted in Wickhambrook.

The battalion were on the ridge from Aveluy Wood to Aveluy on 27th. On 28th, at 9 am the Germans heavily attacked on the left of the Berkshires and right of the 9th RF supported by heavy MG fire and numerous aeroplanes.
They were completely driven off by M.G., L.G., and artillery fire. The battalion had 4 OR killed
