Bertie Henry Smith was born in Hartest (1st qtr 1894 Sudbury 4a:759) son of John and Lementina SMITH (née UPSON)

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at The Green, Hartest with his father John SMITH [43] carpenter; his mother Lementina [43] born Whelnetham; brothers Edwin [19](carpenter) and Joseph [14] houseboy. All except his mother were born in Hartest.

1911 census...Aged 17, a gardener, he was at The Row, Hartest with his father and stepmother. His mother had died in 1903 and father had married Caroline Alberta GIBBONS in 1909.

His brother Joseph died as a prisoner of war and is named on the Menin Gate see here




He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The 2nd/5th Leicestershire Regiment at the time of Bertie's death had not served in a theatre of war, they were actually in Ireland at that time, hence no medals
