Ezekiel Thomas Charles Sore was born in Hartest (3rd qtr 1875 Sudbury 4a:508)) son of Charles Ezekiel and Ann SORE(née LEEKS).Baptised in Hartest on 10th October 1875.
1881 census...Aged 5, he was at Mill Cottage, Hartest withn his father Charle SORE [32] corn miller born Long Melford; his mother Ann [28] born Brent Eleigh; sisters Ellen H [7] born Brettenham and Mary A [3] born Hartest; brother Charles [11 months] born Hartest. 1891 census...Aged 15, a miller, he was at the Miller's House, Cowlinge with his parents; brothers Charles, Horace [8] born Clare, Frederick[6] born Cowlinge and Frank [4] born Cowlinge; sisters Mary Alice, Daisy A [3] and Nettie S [1] both born Cowlinge. 1901 census...Not found in this census. He enlisted in 1896 and was in India. At Ashley Mill were his parents, brothers Frederick, Frank, Arthur S [7], Bertie L [3] and Harry [2] all 3 born Ashley; sisters Daisy A, Nettie S, Jessie M [8] born Cowlinge 1911 census...Aged 35, he was in India at Belgaem with the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. At The Street, Gazeley were his widowed mother; brothers Horace (grocer's porter), Frank and Arthur (both farm labourers) Bertie (carpenter's apprentice) and Harry; sister Nellie Susanna. His father had died in 1907 On the pension card his mother was at High Street, Gazeley. |
He enlisted in Thetford on 13th January 1896, for 7 years in the colojrs, 5 in Reserves, giving his age as 19 years 10 months, born Hartest, a miller. He
was 5 feet 5.75 inches tall, weighed 127 lbs, chest 34.5 to 37 inches. In 1902 he extended to 12 years with the colours, and in 1907 extended again, to 21 years with the colours. He served at home 13-1-1896 to 12-12-1898 India 13-12-1898 to 10-2-1902 South Africa 11--2-1902 to 10-2-1903 Home 11-2-1903 to 11-10-1905 South Africa 12-10-1905 to 3-10-1908 Gibraltar 4-10-1908 to 13-2-1911 India 14-2-1911 to 5-11-1914 Mesopotamia 6-11-1914 to 1-6-1916 At one time his mother lost track of him, having had no letter, that was when he was in India and she last heard from him in May 1915, but of course by then he was in Mesopotamia He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with clasp for Transvaal and South Africa 1902 and also the Long Service and Good Conduct medal. Captured at the fall of Kut el Amara, he died in captivity from Enteritis at Demacobra in June 1916.
