GOLDSPINK, Edward Newell

2nd Lieutenant, Edward Newell GOLDSPINK
Aged 21

17th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
formerly Honourable Artillery Company
Died of his Wounds on 31st July 1917

Edward Newell Goldspink was born in 1895 (4th qtr 1895 Hoxne 4a:803) son of George Frederick and Emily Hannah GOLDSPINK (née CATCHPOLE)

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Whittingham Hall, Fressingfield with his father George Frederick GOLDSPINK [42] farmer born Weybread, Suffolk; his mother Emily Hannah [44] born Rotherhythe; brother Frederick W [4]; sisters Florence M [3] and Emily W [1]. All the children were born in Fressingfield.

1911 census...Aged 15, he was at 7 and 8 Albert Square, Great Yarmouth, a boarder, with his brother Frederick, at the school of William D TOMKINS

He apparently went to Hawkedon Hall as a farm pupil on leaving school, until he joined the H.A.C at the outbreak of war.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Apparently his grave was lost in later fighting, hence being named on the Menin Gate
The Battalion had pressed on with the attack despite very heavy machine gun and shell fire, until they were forced to halt at CLAPHAM JUNCTION,where they dug in and held the ground gained.
Casualties were Lt DIMOND and 2nd Lt Goldspink killed, 2/Lts Bassingham and York wounded; 35 OR killed and 120 OR wounded (a large proportion of the senior NCOs)
