The monument is in the form of a stone obelisk about 13 feet high, on a three stepped base and an octagonal plinth carrying the names.
Unveiled on the 8th August 1920 by Col. O.H.Oakes of Nowton Court and dedicated by the Rector, Rev'd B.P.Oakes.
On the faces of a cube between the plinth and the obelisk are the inscriptions
[6 o'clock] IN MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF
HAWKEDON
[9 o'clock] GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN
[12 o'clock] TO THE GLORY OF GOD
[3 o'clock within a wreath and crossed swords] THE WAR 1914-1918

On the eight faces of the plinth are the names, the 3 o'clock face carrying two names. These are in the form of Forename, Surname above the rank, above the Unit and above the date of death of each man.

The monument stands on the village green, close to the roadside, about 100 yards north west of St. Mary's Church.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
