Sam Smith was born in Hawkedon (2nd qtr 1880 Sudbury 4a:574) son of Samuel and Frances SMITH (née THEOBALD)

1881 census...Aged 11 months, he was in Hawkedon with his father Samuel SMITH [42] farm labourer; his mother Frances [42] born Fowlmere; brothers William [17] farm labourer, Joseph [14], George [12], Arthur [9]; sister Eva [3]. All except his mother were born in Hawkedon

1891 census...Aged 10, he was in Hawkedon with his parents, sisters Eva and Bertha [7]; great aunt Anne SMITH [80].

1901 census...Aged 20, a hospital porter, he was at Suffolk Hospital, Bury St.Edmunds. His parents and sister Bertha were at The Green, Hawkedon.

He married Harriet Jessie LEATHERS [23-11-1881] in 1908 in Bury St.Edmunds. Their son Allan Edgar was born 16th September 1912. His widow was at 3 Albert Street, Bury St.Edmunds on the pension card

1911 census...Aged 31, a hospital porter he was at 3 Albert Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Harriet Jessie





He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The battalion was having a spell in the Reserve trenches but continually harrassed by shrapnel and machine gun fire.
