BOREHAM, Herbert Gascoigne

No.14449, Private, Herbert Gascoigne BOREHAM
Aged 19
apparently no medals
9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died on 6th January 1915

Gascoigne Herbert Boreham was born in Horringer (4th qtr 1896 Thingoe 4a:811) son of David and Amelia BOREHAM (née CHAMBERS)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Church Cottages, Hawstead with his father David BOREHAM [42] a teamster, born Brockley; his mother Amelia [38] born Bartlow, Essex; sisters Ethel [12], May [8] both born Horringer and Mabel [2 months] born Hawstead; brother Bertie [2] born Horringer

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, Gasacoigne was still at Church Cottages with his parents; uncle Albert BOREHAM[36] farm labourer born Brockley; brother Albert, sister Mabel and cousin Arthur William BOREHAM[9 months]. His mother had lost one of her 7 children

No pension card has been found.

He enlisted in Hawstead. On the list of Hawstead men enlisting he is entered in K A which seems to be Kitchener's Army. He died in hospital in Brighton. As he has no medal index card it seems more than likely that he died of some illness whilst undergoing initial training and therefore ineligible for medals. The newly formed 9th Suffolks spent the early part of 1915 training in Brighton
