MASON, Raymond Oswald

No.5827729, Private Raymond Oswald MASON
Aged 24

2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment
Died of Illness in Captivity on 1st July 1943

Raymond Oswald Mason was born on 21st December 1918 (at the Post Office, Hawstead) (1st qtr 1919 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:1165) son of Beatrice Maud MASON. Joe and Ellen are his parents on CWGC, but the Japanese PoW card has his mother as Beatrice.
Raymond's mother was the unmarried daughter of Joe Mason. Joe and his first wife Sarah Jane then raised the boy. Sarah Jane died in 1931 and Joe married Ellen BENNETT, hence the appearance of Ellen as "mother" of Raymond( rather than step grandmother). Birth certificate indicates this.

In the 1939 register he was an agricultural engine driver, living at 11 Council Houses, Thingoe with his father, Joe W MASON a retired shepherd and his mother Ellen. That address is also given for his wife. He married Phyllis TOOKE in Bury St.Edmunds in 1940, later of Hawstead

He was captured at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanes on 15th February 1942 and died from beri beri
