Arthur Wright was born in Hawstead (3rd qtr 1888 Thingoe 4a:667) son of Charles and Sarah Ann WRIGHT (née DEARE)



1891 census...Aged 2, he was at No.4 Mill Post Cottages, Whepstead Road, Hawstead with his widower grandfather Robert WRIGHT [69] farm labourer born Whepstead; father Charles WRIGHT [28] farm labourer born Whepstead; his mother Sarah A [28] born Nowton; sisters Ellen M [7] born Nowton and Elizabeth M [7 months] born Hawstead.

1901 census...Aged 12, he was still at Mill Post Cottages with his parents, brothers Frederick [5] and William [4 months]; sister Ethel V [3] and grandfather Robert WRIGHT. All the children were born in Hawstead

1911 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was still at Mill Post Cottages with his parents; half brother George DEARE [29] farm labourer, born Nowton; brothers Frederick [15], William [10] and Ernest Victor [7], all born in Hawstead; sister Ethel Victoria [13]. His mother had lost 3 of her 10 children.

His brother Frederick was killed almost 2 months earlier, in France and is named on the Vis en Artois Memorial see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He was wounded in in October 1916 , his Distinguished Conduct Medal was gazetted on 14th November 1916 and he was wounded again in November 1917.
