Stanley William Gladwell was born in Hadleigh (1st qtr 1893 Cosford 4a:771), son of William James and Laura Maria GLADWELL (née CHAPLIN)

His father William James GLADWELL died in 1900.

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Angel Street, Hadleigh with his widowed mother Laura GLADWELL [30] born Semer; his sisters Beatrice [13], Maud [10], Mabel [6] and Violet [4]; brother Edward [2]. All except his mother were born in Hadleigh.
His mother married William CATCHPOLE in Hadleigh in 1906.

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at Heath Farm, Hessett with his stepfather William CATCHPOLE [49] foreman on farm; his mother; sister Violet; brother Edward; CATCHPOLE half brothers Clifford [4], William [3] and Charles [1]; lodger Mary Ann WARREN [75]

On the pension card his mother was at Heath Farm, Hessett.



He enlisted in Ipswich.
On 20th July 1916 the 2nd Suffolks were involved in attacks on Longueval and Delville Wood, incurring heavy casualties from day long shelling. The CWGC records a total of 115 killed, only 26 having known graves.




Stanley Gladwell is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme pier/face 1C/2A
