Herbert Green was born in Hessett (2nd qtr 1896 Stow 4a:827), son of Jacob and Elizabeth GREEN (née GREEN)
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Old Hall, Hessett with his father Jacob GREEN [41] farm labourer; his mother Elizabeth [37]; brothers Mannasech (sic) [18] and Ernest [16] both farm labourers, Walter [9], Reginald [3] and Thomas [2]; sisters Charlotte [13], Penny [10] and Ellen [7]. They were all born in Hessett. 1911 census...Aged 14, a back house boy, he was still at Old Hall, Hessett with his parents; brothers Ernest and Walter (farm labourers) , Reginald, Thomas, Alfred [10] and George [2]; sister Florence [2]. His mother had lost 2 of her 14 children. On the pension card his mother was at 49 North Road, Holmwood, nr. Chesterfield. His brother Walter died of his wounds in 1918 see here |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He died of wounds at No.5 C.C.S. Corbie
With no service record available and dying of wounds it cannot be said exactly where he was or when he was wounded. The most recent operations of the 9th Suffolk were in the battle of the Ancre on 15th September
