Charles John Prentice was born in Old Buckenham, Norfolk on 10th November 1889(4th qtr 1889 Guiltcross 4b:243), son of Henry and Mary Ann PRENTICE (née CARTER). Baptised in Old Buckenham on 3rd August 1890.

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Abbey Road, Old Buckenham with his father Henry PRENTICE [31] farm labourer born Kenninghall; his mother Mary Ann [32] born Fressingfield; his brothers Henry [8] and William [6]. The children were all born in Old Buckenham.

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Brakey Close, Great Barton with his parents; brothers Henry (farm labourer), William (yardman on farm), Eber [6] born Old Buckenham; his sisters Hannah[8] born Old Buckenham and Emma [4] born Great Barton.

1911 census...Aged 20 he was a Private in the 15th Lancers at Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa. His parents were at Church Cottages, Great Barton with his brothers Eber George (farm labourer) and George [6] born Greatb Barton; his sisters Hannah Marion, Emma Louisa and Dorothy Edith [4] born Great Barton.

He married Amy TINSON [5-4-1893] on 1st April 1914. Their son Charles George was born 31st August 1914 in Hessett.

On the pension card his widow was at Waterbridge, Hessett, moving later to 13 Berryfield Road, Walworth London. She married William James YOUNG in 1920 and lived at 6 Chatteris Road, New Kent Road, London



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He did not get the Clasp to his 1914 Star, despite being in France in August 1914. This was most likely due to no relative claiming the clasp. It is inconceivable that he never came in range of enemy guns before 22nd November 1914.

The day he died the 15th King's Hussars were operating between Caix and Harbonniéres
