George Stiff was born in Rattlesden (2nd qtr 1895 Stow 4a:820), son of George and Annie STIFF (née TURNER)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Butcher's Farm, Rattlesden with his father George STIFF [44] horseman born Norton; his mother Annie [43] born Felsham; sister Annie [9]; brothers William [7] and Frederick C [8 months]. All the children were born in Rattlesden.

On the pension card his mother was at Free Croft Farm, Bradfield St. George, his father was later at Gedding.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He had only been in the theatre of war for 11 days when he was posted missing.

The Battalion were in the Reserve trenches, enjoying the chance of a bath and a reasonable supply of drinking water, albeit still subject to shellfire. That was according to Murphy's "History of the Suffolk Regiment", however the figures from CWGC paint a different picture, recording 52 deaths on 21st August.

The date he was reported missing is incorrect.
