No.1384736, Sergeant, Ronald Charles George CATER
Aged 21

425 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Died in Air Accident on 1st February 1943

Ronald Charles George Cater was born 1921 (3rd qtr 1921 Greenwich 1d:1815) son of Charles Edward and Eliza May CATER (née LAUNDERS).

His father was born in Horringer and had been a Metropolitan Police Sergeant. His parents had moved to Horringer from London, they were still in Westminster in 1939

425 (RCAF) 'Alouette' Squadron were based at RAF Dishforth with Vickers Wellington B.Mk.III bombers until 15th May 1943 when they moved to North Africa. It was a unique formation within the RCAF in that the organization order designated it 'French-Canadian' and Bomber Command was combed for French-Canadian air and ground crew to fill its ranks.

Ronald with crew and some maintenance personnel, had collected Vickers Wellington MkIII X3361 from 43 Maintenance Unit, RAF Kingscliffe to ferry back to Dishforth.
They crashed shortly after take-off after the loss of engine power, which was believed to be due to excessive ground running before take-off. Three were killed. Canadian Sgt George Joseph GIGUERE and Sgt Joseph Marcel Gaston PERRON (died of his injuries 2 days later) were buried in Wittering but Ronald was returned home to Horringer

This is a 425 Squadron Wellington

Ronald Cater is buried in Horringer (St.Leonard's) Churchyard
