No.43168, Corporal, Oliver Emmett CRACK
Aged 24

7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment
formerly 1333, Suffolk Cyclist Regt
Killed in Action on 5th April 1918

Oliver Emmett Crack was born in Horringer (4th qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:723) son of John Cuthbert and Caroline CRACK (née BOLLINGBROKE).

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at The Street, Horringer with his parents; sister Kate, brothers Edward (gas fitter), Edgar, Thomas(Lionel) [11], and Albert [4].

1911 census...Aged 17, a porter in a drapery warehouse, he was boarding at 7 Holborn Circus, London. His parents were still in Horringer with his sister Kate. His mother had lost 2 of her 11 children

His brother Edward died in India in 1917 see here and his brother Lionel died in 1917 in Belgium see here

He enlisted in Horringer.
The battalion was in the line on front of Albert, having relieved the 12th Manchesters. Very bad weather on 4th made the ground very muddy.
The Bn was repeatedly called upon to repulse German attacks in the SW of Albert, and had several times to knock out machine established by the enemy. When the Australians on their right were ordered to withdraw, this left the Bn right flank exposed and about 8m pm the Germans had estabished themselves at 62d.E.3.c.3.7. from where they commanded the valley, with a machine gun at 62d.E.3.c.1.3...Later they set up a defensive line from the railway station to the Amiens road, which was instrumental in holding back the enemy on their next assault
