Walter Gooch was born in Horringer (2nd qtr 1897 Thingoe 4a:789) son of John and Mary Ann GOOCH (née BROWN).

1911 census...Aged 13, an errand boy, he was at Twine Cottages, Sharp's Lane, Horringer with his parents.

The pension card has his mother at Sharp's Lane Corner, Horringer.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
34 Casualty Clearing Station was at Marchelepot until 24th March. Burials were in Marchelepot British Cemetery which was cleared in 1920 and all were re-interred in Roye. As Walter died in a CCS, there is no way of telling exactly when or where he was wounded. The Battalion were at Vermand the days leading up to the German Spring offensive which started in 21st March. That is only 26 Km from Marchelepot so it is possible Walter was one of 6 wounded when a shell hit the hut at Vermand housing the signallers.
