BUTCHER, Percy Levi
Served as Percy LEVI

No.5828702, Private, Percy Levi BUTCHER
Aged 27

5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of Illness in captivity on 25th August 1943

Percy Levi Butcher was born at 11 Council Houses,Ixworth on 29th May 1917 (2nd qtr 1917 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:1430) son of Alice Maud TURRINGTON, stepson of Harry FROUD. His mother as Alice Maud BUTCHER married Harry FROUD in 1919.

In 1921, aged 4 yrs 1 month, he was at Tollgate House, Ixworth with his grandfsther Levi TURRINGTON [48] road worker born Lakenheath, grandmother Sarah [45] born Ixworth and cousin Hilda BROWN [11] born Ixworth. Both his parents were alive, but their location is not known and the marriage of Alice Turrington to ? Butcher has not been found.

I dpon't suppose , unless a relative comes forward with the answer, that we will ever know who Mr Butcher was and why Percy dropped Butcher as asuname and usd Levi in the Army.

He was captured at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese on 15th February 1942. One PoW card gives the cause of death as indigestion ??
