Charles S Cotterell was born in Ixworth (1st qtr 1896 Thingoe 4a:783), son of Alfred George and Emily COTTERELL (née PLUMMER).

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at High Street, Ixworth with his grandfather George COTTERELL [50] horse clipper born Culford; his grandmother Laura [49]; aunts Annie [19] and Mary [14]. All except his grandfather born in Ixworth. His parents were "near the Woolpack Inn", Pakenham, father Alfred G COTTERELL [27]domestic coachman, born Pakenham; mother Emily [24] born Ixworth; brother Wallace [3] born Ixworth and sister Violet B [1] born Norwich.

1911 census...Aged 15, a bottle washer, he was at Stow Road, Ixworth with his parents; brothers Wallace T (errand boy), Alfred [9] and George [3]; sisters Violet, Grace [7] Norah [5] and Florence [1]; uncle Dennis PLUMMER [21] wine/spirit porter. All recorded as born in Ixworth.

On the pension card his parents were at The Bridge Ixworth, on death of his mother, father moved to 24 Council Houses, New Road, Ixworth.



He attested in Bury St.Edmunds on 26th October 1915, No.2275 Suffolk Yeomanry, from "near the Bridge" Ixworth. He gave his age as 19 years 8 months, a cellarman, 5 feet 8.75 inches tall, weighing 144 lbs, chest 33 to 35.5 inches.
Posted to 4th Bn 26-8-1916, then 7th Royal West Kents on 7th September 1916 only to be recorded missing on 29th September. He was found in 1919 close by his final resting place. The image here clearly shows the chalk lines of the trench system fronting the Redoubt.
At the time of his death the 7th Queen's Own had a footing on the Schwaben Redoubt, lost it to a counter attack then took it again. This was a period of ebb and flow in the attempts to force the Germans out of the whole redoubt (just north of Thiepval)



Charles was found here and re-interred in Mill Road Cemetery in September 1919
