John Charles Morley Hawes was born in Wicken about 1890, son of John and Susan Ann HAWES (née CARMAN).Baptised in Wicken on 6th June 1890. No birth registration has been found. His father died in 1890.

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at "South of Main Road", Wicken with his widowed mother [27] a pauper, born Lakenheath; sisters Sarah Ann [5] and Harriett [3] both born Wicken. Harriett seems to be registered at birth in Wicken, but not named.

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at The Old Almshouses, Wicken with his mother (now recorded as farm labourer) and sister Harriet.

In 1895 his mother married Walter COOPER (in Thingoe)
In 1897 John married Sarah COCKSEDGE in 1897 (in Thingoe), [25-12-1872] later of Thetford Road, Ixworth

1901 census...Aged 21, a woodsman's labourer, he was at Old Farm Cottages, Timworth with his wife Sarah [30] born Sicklesmere; their sons Frederick John [3] and Sidney Morley [10-8-1899] both born Timworth. His mother was at The Green, Timworth with her new husband and his children.

1911 census...Aged 30, horseman on farm, he was "opposite the Woolpack", Ixworth with his wife , sons Fred, Sidney and Percy Charles [7-7-1903]; daughter Lily Annie [1-4-1901]. All the children were born in Timworth. The address was actually in the parish of Pakenham.



The pension card has his widow at Thetford Road, Ixworth. Their son Sidney now recorded as an invalid.



He enlisted in Ixworth.
In the battle of Loos the 7th Suffolks had made some advances and on 19th October the Germans counter-attacked in strength from the Quarries but were beaten off, at the cost that day, of 2 killed. However the total casualties for the battle (13th to 19th) were 8 officers killed, 3 wounded, other ranks killed and wounded 150.
