James Seaber was born on 11th August 1882 in Isleham (Newmarket Q3-1882 3B:531), baptised on 30th November 1884 in Isleham, the son of Charles and Mary Ann SEABER
(née GAMMON).
1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Ferry Drove, Isleham with his father Charles [48] a waterman; his mother Mary Ann [40], brothers Elijah [20] and Charles [15] both general labourers; sisters Jane [13], Alice [11], Lily [4] and Ada [1]. All the family were born in Isleham. 1901 census...Believed to be:-Aged 26 ? he was on barge The Gordon on Willesden with his wife elizabethElizabeth [19] both born in England. His parents (father now farm labourer) and brother Elijah, sisters Alice and Ada, and a nephew Thomas R [9 months] were at East End, Isleham. On 7th October 1901 in Paddington at St Mary Magdalene, he married Elizabeth Lines SHUREY [4-9-1882]. His occupation was boatman. Address at the time was 16 Clarendon Street, Paddington. They went on to have four children, James [19-12-1901], Lily Elizabeth 16-9-1903, Violet Maud [31-8-1908] and Thomas [26-7-1911] The address on the pension card is 3 East Cottages, Little Church Sreet, Lisson Grove, Marylebone. 1911 census...James, wife and children have not been found in this census. His parents and brother Elijah were now at Coal Yard Drove, Isleham. Their son Thomas' baptism was registered on 6th August 1911 at Christchurch, Marylebone, living at 72 Richmond Street, His widow remarried in 1918 to William H Turvy in St.Pancras |
Enlisted in London. The only known facts are CWGC, Medal Index card and "Soldiers Died". No other records have been found. Corbie being close to Amiens and used by 2 Casualty Clearing Stations ( No.5 and No.21). A relative tells us that his death certificate gave Syncope (degenerative disease of the heart)as cause of death. His rank on his medal card is Driver, medal cards seldom use any but the substantive rank. |
