PECK, John

No.889585, Gunner, John PECK
Aged 25

D Battery, 168th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery
Killed in Action on 29th April 1917

John Peck was born in Pakenham (3rd qtr 1891 Thingoe 4a:738 ) son of George and Elizabeth PECK (née HOWE). Once again the parish boundary of Pakenham and Ixworth confuses, Grimstone End being much closer to Ixworth village than Pakenham, albeit south of Pakenham Water Mill. In fact the census has Grimstone End as part of Ixworth albeit the Ecclesiastical Parish

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Grimstone End, Pakenham with his father George PECK [52] farm labourer, his mother Elizabeth [49] born Ixworth; brothers Frank [19], Charles [17] and Sidney [14] all farm labourers, Alfred [11] and Frederick [7]. All except his mother born in Pakenham.

His mother died in 1908

1911 census...Aged 19, he was at Baileys Pool, Ixworth with is widower father and brother Sidney and Arthur, all farm workers. Brother Frederick was an estate carpenter, at 57 Great Livermere boarding with his uncle and aunt,Harry and Mary Ann ROSIER and his grandmother Susan HOWE [92]. Another boundary confusion.

His brother Frederick died of illness in UK in 1916 see here

He enlisted in Ipswich.
The battery was just North West of St Quentin

John had been buried here and re-interred in 1919

John Peck is buried in Chapelle Military Cemetery, Holnon, France 3:B:2
