Harry Plummer was born in Ixworth (4th qtr 1882 Thingoe 4a:610) son of Ellen PLUMMER. His mother married Harry PECK in 1897

1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his grandfather Obediah PLUMMER [61] farm labourer born Ixworth; his grandmother Lucy [56] born Hessett and uncles Thomas [27], James [25],Arthur [20] Wallace [19] and Aurona [14] All born in Ixworth, all farm labourers. His mother Ellen PLUMMER [29] born Ixworth, was lodging with John WISE and his wife in Thetford Road, Ixworth.

His mother married Harry PECK in 1897.

1901 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was "near the Woolpack", Pakenham with his stepfather Harry PECK [39] farm labourer, born Pakenham and his mother.

1911 census...Aged 28, a farm labourer he was at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his step father and his mother.

On the pension card his mother was at Stow Lane, Ixworth.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
Having missed the horrific 1st day on the Somme, the 7th Suffolks moved up for a frontal assault on Ovillers. Assaulting in eight waves, the leading one starting 10 minutes before zero, which was set for 3:15 am. The first 4 waves got to the German 3rd line, some penetrating the village. In the darkness however the following waves failed to make touch and the Germans were able to rush in and cut them off. At the 3rd line of resistance fierce fighting took place which led to the attack coming to a standstill and the battalion losing heavily. Only 4 officers were not casualties, a total of 470 casualties were recorded.

CWGC has a total of 157 killed of which 112 have no known grave
