Samuel David Bowers was born in Temple End, Little Thurlow (Risbridge Q3-1896 4A:736), baptised in St.Peter's, Little Thurlow on 4th October 1896, son of James and Kate Elizabeth BOWERS (née MARSH).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Temple End, Little Thurlow with his father James BOWERS [36] farm labourer born Gt.Wratting; his mother Kate [37] born Haverhill; brother George W [11]; sisters Agatha M [10], Jessie E [8], Edith [7], Florence [2] and Louisa M [8 months]. All the children were born in Little Thurlow.

1911 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was still at Temple End with his parents, sister Louisa May ; brothers George William (farm labourer) and James Walter [5] born Little Thurlow. One sibling had died, believed to be Florence in 1904.

This was still the address on the pension card.

He enlisted in Haverhill.
Dying of his wounds and no service records found, it cannot be stated when or where exactly he was wounded. Nine Elms Cemetery, near Poperinghe, was used by N0.44 Casualty Clearing Station so this was quite probably where he died. It was just after the end of the 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele)
