Fred Rowling was born in Little Thurlow (Risbridge Q2-1886 4A:639), son of Alfred William and Sarah ROWLING (née SMITH).
1891 census...Aged 5, he was at The Street, Little Thurlow with his father Alfred ROWLING [31] boot maker; his mother Sarah [31] born Kedington; brother Robert [1] and sister Susan [4]. All except his mother were born in Little Thurlow. 1901 census...Aged 15, bricklayer's apprentice, he was still at The Street, Little Thurlow with his parents; brothers Robert, Thomas [7], Allen [5] Seymour [4] and Montague [1]; sister Mary [9]. The new siblings all born in Little Thurlow. He married Mary (Margaret) Annie WIMPRESS [12-8-1890] in 1910, the sister of Thomas WIMPRESS see here 1911 census...Aged 25, estate bricklayer, he was at The Green, Little Thurlow with his wife Margaret Annie [20] born Luddington, Northamptonshire. Their son, Frederick Robert, was born on 2-5-1913. The pension card puts them at Little Bradley. |

He enlisted in Haverhill .
The battalion were in the Ypres salient, near Dickebusch. A quiet week it seems and they were relieved in the line on 27th by the 3rd Bn. Rifle Brigade, the relief finishing at 19;30 pm, the battalion returning to Camp MicMac in the pouring rain. 3 men were killed and 4 others wounded. Camp Micmac was 2 miles west of Dickebusch on the way to Ouderdom.
