Walter Jacobs Phillips was born in 1917 (Risbridge Q4-1917 4A:1170), son of Frederick and Elsie Maud PHILLIPS (née IVES).

In 1939 his parents were at Wilsey Cottage, Little Wratting, father was born 21/9/1892 in Little Wratting, he was a horseman; mother born 26/10/1890 in Haverhill. There is one closed record.



Having regard to his age it seems probable that he served with 1st Army in Africa before going on to Italy
In October 1944 the 3rd Grenadiers were part of 1st Guards Brigade, 6th Armoured Division, north of the Gothic Line, following the retreating Germans into the high Apennine mountains. They lost two men on the 6th October.

Walter Phillips is buried in Santerno Valley War Cemetery, grave 2:B:18
having been brought in from another burial place on 23rd May 1945.
