Born in Q2-1879 [Newmarket 3b:522] in Newmarket to Charles Harold and Louisa HUGHES (née WILDERSPIN)

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at 12 Exning Road, Newmarket with his father Harold Charles HUGHES [25] stableman born Chester; his mother Louisa [25] born Bottisham.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at 7 Eleanor Terrace, Burwell Road, Exning with his parents, sister Kate [10],; brothers Albert Hubert [8], Sidney James [4](partially blind from birth)and William Gerald [1]. All the children were born in Newmarket.

He married Evelina Florence JONES in Farnham in Q4-1900


He enlisted on 7th March 1898 and he died of his wounds received on 9th November, on 10th,at Orebyfontein in South Africa.(in Memoriam by S.Wall) From a report on the Times January 24th 1902
Whilst skirmishing Pte 4163 HH Hughes 1st King Dragoon Guards was fatally wounded by a six year old Boer boy who approached and shot him in the abdomen with a concealed pistol. Cpt EA Williams was killed and Lt HH Harris wounded in the skirmish. A report to the War Office was made by Sgt C Probertts of Pte Hughes' troop and his comrade Pte MF Elmer.

His Queens South Africa medal has clasps for Cape Colony - Orange Free State - South Africa 1901
