The only local SIMPSON/CATTON birth on GRO is an un-named male (4th qtr 1881 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:605). Frederick was the son of John Smith and "Emma" Susan Emily SIMPSON (née CATTON). Baptised on 22nd June 1884 at St Mary's, Pakenham.


1891 census...Aged 7, he was at Grimstone End, Pakenham with his father John S SIMPSON [57] gardener born Norton; his mother Emily S [53] (recorded as 'imbecile'); brother Robert C [16]; sisters Rose A [14] and Gertrude A [13]; nephews Herbert W [13] and Harry D [3] SIMPSON. All except his father born in Pakenham.

1901 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at Grimstone End still, with his parents; brother William [1866] (stoker on steamship) recorded as born Horringer; sister Rose; nephews William H SIMPSON [17] born Hornsey, paralysed and Harry SIMPSON.

His father died in 1909.

1911 census...Aged 27, a shepherd, he was at The Fen, Pakenham, head of family, with his mother; brothers William (farm labourer) and Robert (un-employed); nephew Harry (farm labourer). His mother had lost 2 of her 14 children.

On the pension card his dependant was brother Robert Charles Simpson c/o Mrs TWITCHETT, Pakenham Terrace, Bury St. Edmunds.

Another nephew, Edward Twitchett (son of sister Eliza) was killed in 1916 in France see here.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. His legatee was sister, Mrs Rose Anne FOREMAN.
The war diary has :-
Artillery activity on both sides was considerably increased, at times developing into intense bombardment. Enemy aircraft displayed normal activity. Patrols under 2/Lts Riddett, Dawson and Shrapnel went out during the night with intention of examining the enemy wire and defences, and if possible, to secure idnetification. The enemy front line in front of the Battalion Sector was found to be unoccupied, but no identifications were secured. Information was received during the day that the Battn would be relieved by the 2nd Bedfords on the night of 23/24th inst.
