Harold Walter Warren Cocksedge was born in Badwell Ash (3rd qtr 1897 |Stow 4a:844) son of Ada Mary COCKSEDGE. She married Walter WARREN in 1901

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Long Thurlow, Badwell sh with his mother Ada Mary COCKSEDGE [24] born Badwell Ash, living with his grand father George COCKSEDGE [49] farm labourer born Badwell Ash, his grandmother Emma [46] born Walsham le Willows, and his mother's 3 brothers and 2 sisters, all born Badwell Ash.

1911 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his step-father Walter WARREN [34] farm labourer, born Gt. Ashfield; his mother Ada Mary [33] born Badwell Ash; sisters Vera [8] born Gt.Ashfield and Mildred [2] born Chevington; brother Hubert [4] born Badwell Ash. His mother had lost 3 of her 7 children.

On the pension card his step-father was at Wood House, Ixworth.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 5th August 1916, giving his age as 18 years 9 months, single, a horseman living at Poultry Farm, Great Barton, next of kin his step-father of same address. He was 5 feet 2.75 inches tall chest 31 to 33 inches.
He was posted to the BEF on 16th November 1916, to the 2nd Bn Northants Regiment and on 29-11-1916 to the 4th Bn.Northants and immediately posted to 4th Suffolks and re-numbered 50511.
He contracted influenza on 12th December 1916, was admitted to 101 Field Ambulance and on 15th admitted to 34 CCS at Grove Town (Meaulte) and then, seriously ill, he was returned to UK on 25th January 1917. 16th March 1917 he then passed through several Labour Corps companies from the Suffolk Regiment 4th Reserve Battalion. 5th Labour Battalion, to 38 H.S. Labour Coy, ending up in 433 Agricultural Company at Bedford.

Army Form 5080 completed by his mother in September 1919 gave his surviving blood relatives as his parents of Wood House, Ixworth; brothers Herbert [12] and Percy [4] of Wood House, Ixworth; sisters Vera [16] Manor Farm, Honington, Mildred [10] and Winifred [8] of Wood House, Ixworth.

He died at Brick House Red Cross Hospital, St.Albans from influenza and bronchial pneumonia.
