John Allan Woodgate was born on 18th July 1924 (3rd qtr 1924 Thetford 4b:503), son of Bertie George and Dorothy Ellen WOODGATE (DAVEY).

Father was born 8th August 1895 at Leiston, died 4th December 1977 in Woodford, nr Kettering. His mother was born 3rd May 1895 in Chedgrave, Norfolk, died 22nd October 1974 in Woodford, nr. Kettering. He had a brother Robert William (1927-2007) and a sister Sheila June (1934-2017).

They lived New Cottages, Bury Road, Pakenham in the 1930s/40s.



He was serving at Abu Sueir in Egypt. On 8th January 1945 flying as Flight Engineer in a Consolidated Liberator MkVI, ser.no EW101 of 1675 Heavy Conversion Unit on a night training exercise, they crashed 3 miles north of Hadera, Palestine. Henk Welting's database records that control was lost in cloud; aircraft entered a spin, recovery led to structural failure of complete tail unit. All 7 of the crew were killed.


The crew were :- Warrant Officer George CLOWES - Air Gunner; Flt Sgt Charles GRUBB - Pilot; Sgt John HADDOW -W/Op/Air Gunner-; Warrant Officer John JONES - Air Gunner; Flt Sgt Donald LANE - Navigator; Flt Lt Thomas MACAULAY - Observer (RCAF) and Flt Sgt John WOODGATE - Flt Engineer.
