Alfred Challis was born in Brockley (3rd qtr 1888 Thingoe 4a:665) son of George Theophilus and Roseanna CHALLIS (née DEATH)

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at The Green, Rede with his father George [31] farm labourer born Rede; his mother Roseanna [28] born Chevington; brothers George [9] born Chedburgh and John [6] born Brockley.

1901 census...Aged 12, stockman on farm, he was at Cottage, Bury Road, Rede with his parents; brothers George (horseman>, John (horseman), Fred [10], Harry [6] and Frank [2]; sister Edie [4]. The last 4 born in Rede

1911 census...Aged 22, a cattleman on farm at East Harlsey, Northallerton, Yorks working for Robert Wood. Still in Rede were his parents, brothers Fred, Harry and frank; sisters Edie and Alice Kate [9] born Rede.

On the pension card his mother was at Rede School Road.



He was seemingly part of the Army of Occupation in Bulgaria after its surrender in September 1918. He died of disease at 79th Field Ambulance, Salonica. Originally buried in Ruschuk, he was re-interred in Sofia.
