William Alfred Robert Mead was born in 1922 (4th qtr 1922 Bury St.Edmunds 4a 1476) son of Algye and Happy (née GARNHAM). His mother died at or near his birth. Father was at No.4 Council Houses, Stanningfield Road, Sicklesmere in the 1939 register, with William's sister Doris (2 closed records)






Built as the USS Satterlee (DD 190), on 8 Oct 1940 she was transferred to the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Belmont (H-46).

At 22.12 on 31 January 1942, HMS Belmont (H-46) of the 3rd Escort Group, with convoy NA-2, was torpedoed and sunk by U-82 (Siegfried Rollmann) south of Newfoundland. There were no survovirs.
