Davy Roper was born in Stoke by Nayland (1st qtr 1897 Sudbury 4a:785), son of Henry and Ellen Rose ROPER (née ROGERS).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Long Green, Great Bardfield, Essex with his father Henry ROPER [37] shepherd born Otley; his mother Ellen [36] born Bedfield; sisters Gertrude [12] born Earl Soham, Henrietta [8] and Elsie [6] both born Martlesham and Dora [2] born Stoke by Nayland; brother Alfred [9] born Martlesham.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at The Street, Stowlangtoft with his parents; sisters Dora and Annie [4] born Pakenham; brothers Henry Edward [10] born Great Bardfield, Ernest George [7] born Ixworth and William [2] born Ixworth.

The pension card has his mother at Stowlangtoft.


He enlisted in Norton. He died at 2nd/2nd London Casualty Clearing Station at Meaulte.

The battalion took part in the attack on the ridge between Morval and Lesboeufs and the Quadrilateral on 15th September and suffered heavy casualties. Possibly this was when Davy was wounded.
