HOUSDEN, Alfred

No.3686, Sergeant, Alfred HOUSDEN
Aged 26

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on 5th June 1900

It is not always possible to match the soldier with the civilian with these Boer War casualties.
That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity

Alfred HOUSDEN's birth registration has not been found. It seems likely he was the brother of speed skater Walter Housden from Wicken. They were actually from Dimmocks Cote, which can be classified as Upware or Wicken and the census of 1891 does not help by putting the place of birth as West of River for several of the family. This does however make it quite possible that the following is correct, despite no birth registration there is a record of the baptism of Alfred HOUSDEN son of Samuel and Eliza HOUSDEN of Upware/Wicken on 5th July 1874.

1881 census...Aged 7, he was at Dimmock's Cote with his father Samuel HOUSDEN [33] born Landbeach; hos mother Eliza [34] born Stretham; sisters Emily [13] born Landbeach, {Eliza} Anne [5] and Ada (Florence ?) [2] both born Wicken; brothers Fred [11] and Walter [9] both born Cottenham and Clement [6 months] born Wicken.

1891 census...Aged 16, he was still at Dimmocks Cote withn his parents; brothers Walter, Ezra {Samuel)[8] and {Henry}John [10 months] sisters Ada , Gertie ? [10}, Laura [6] and {Elvira}Kate [4]

By 1911 his mother had lost 4 of her 11 children. Most of the children's birth registrations were found as HOUSDEN, née SADLER. The rest are a mystery

He died at Pretoria, having been wounded nearby on 4th June, in fact the medal roll records him as dying of wounds on 5th

His Queens South Africa medal carries the clasps Cape Colony - Orange Free State - Johannesburg
