Wilfred Lawson Clayden was born in Steeple Bumpstead (Risbridge Q2-1886 4A:638), son of Thomas and Mary CLAYDEN (née TURNER).
1891 census...Aged 4, he was at North Street, Steeple Bumpstead with his father Thomas CLAYDEN [51] bricklayer; his mother Mary [46]; brother Dyer J.T. [14]; sister Vinnie F [7 months]. All were born in Steeple Bumpstead. 1901 census...Aged 14, brick layer's apprentice,he was at North Street still, with his parents and sister Vinnie. 1911 census...Aged 24, single, a bricklayer, he was still with his parents in North Street. One of the four siblings had died In 1915 he married Mary Eliza MANN [2-1-1880] (Risbridge Q1-1915 4A:1355), she already had a daughter, Doris Mary Maud [19-5-1905]. Initially in Steeple Bumpstead, his widow moved to c/o Mrs Wood, 68 East Street, Bsker Street, London. |

Wilfred enlisted in Chelsea.
As he died of his wounds in a base hospital there is no way, in the absence of his service records, of saying where or when he was wounded. However the Haverhill Echo of 20th October 1917 did say that a telegraph had been received that W. Clayden had passed away in the night as a result of shrapnel wounds in his thigh, at an Australian Hospital in Rouen. |
