Arthur John Ridgewell was born in 1882 (appears to be Arthur Willie in Risbridge Q1-1882 4A:577), baptised in Sturmer on 4th June 1882, son of John and Julia Susannah RIDGEWELL (née WHIPPS).


1891 census...Aged 9, he was at Bulls Farm, Water Road, Sturmer with his father John RIDGEWELL [31] farm labourer, born Sturmer; his mother Julia [35] born Birdbrook; sister Winifred A [2] born Sturmer and half brother Walter W WHIPPS [11] born Birdbrook

His father died in 1898.

1901 census...Aged 19, stockman, he was at The Street, Sturmer with his widowed mother; sisters Winnie, sister Ellen [9] born Sturmer; brother George [7] born Sturmer.

1911 census...Aged 29, farm labourer, he was at 1 Spring Cottages, Sturmer Road, Haverhill with his widowed mother; sisters Winifred and Ellen; brother George (farm labourer)

CWGC have his parents as of Pound Road, Wangford, Lowestoft but that detail has not yet been explained. The pension card has his mother at 1 Spring Cottage, Haverhill, Arthur being wounded and missing.


Arthur enlisted in Haverhill. His "Soldiers Personal Effects" entry says he died of wounds.
He was killed shortly after the 3rd battle of Ypres ( known as Passchendaele), not far from Passchendaele Military Cemetery

War diary:- 22/11- C Coy moves up to CREST FARM and A Coy supplies a working party of 2 platoons to help them dig fortifications and accommodation there after dusk.
D Coy moves to vicinity of HAMBURGH 10.am. B Coy carrying up shelters for them to make accommodation with. Casualties two.
