No.S/19923, Quartermaster Sergeant, William Herbert PETERS
Aged 39
William Herbert Peters was born in Barrington in 1881 (Royston Q3-1881 3A:402), son of Rich and Sarah PETERS (née PALMER),
1891 census...Aged 9, he was at High Street, Barrington with his father Rich PETERS [36] labourer; his mother Sarah [32] born Burwell; sisters Mary [7] and Eleanor [6] and uncle Charles PETERS [38] labourer. All except his mother were born in Barrington. This recording of birth at Barrington is a little confusing, but this does certainly appear to be the correct family, Barrington being recorded more often than Swaffham Prior 1901 census...Possibly the William Peters [19] a barman at 26-27 Foley Street, Marylebone giving his birth place as Swaffham Prior. His parent were at the "Rose and Crown, Mill Hill, Swaffham Prior with his sisters Mary and Eleanor and brother Rich [4] born Swaffham Prior, and uncle Charles PETERS 1911 census...Aged 29, he was a butcher in the Army Service Corps in Africa. His parents were still at the Rose and Crown with his sister Mary and brother Rich. His entry in the 1920 Absent Voters list has him as S/19923 S.S.M., R.A.S.C., of Cage Hill, Swaffham Prior. At probate, his address was Hillside, Swaffham Prior and administration was to Rich Peters, a retired butcher |
He had been awarded Good Conduct and Long Service Medals
Without his Army records or his death certificate there is no way of telling how he came to die. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission recognises him, albeit he has a private grave and headstone.
