Wilfred Terrill Rolfe was born in Tostock ( 4th qtr 1896 Stow 4a:839), son of Frederick John and Sarah Alice (née RUNDLE). The surname can be ROLPH or ROLFE and he is at times Wilfred, others, Wilfrid. The birth registration however is Wilfred Terrill ROLFE.

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Rectory Farm, Tostock with his father Frederick ROLPH [34] farmer born Pakenham; his mother Alice [34] born Glastonbury; sisters Rita [2] and Eileen [6 months] both born Tostock.

1911 census...Aged 14, he was still at Rectory Farm with his widower father; brother Eric [8]; sisters Rita and Eileen.His mother had died in 1909.



He enlisted in Chelmsford.

Strangely the war diary has the 20th London Regt at Steenvorde, undertaking local routine work, even having a football match v 14th Londons. Steenvorde being on the French Belgian border, some distance from Heninel/Croisilles
