George Frederick Dean was born Weston Colville (Linton Q2-1886 3B:552), son of David and Louisa DEAN (née PETERS).

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at The Hall Cottages, Church End, Weston Colville with his father David DEAN [35] domestic groom born Fulbourn; his mother [36] born Fenstanton; brothers William [7] born Fulbourn and Arthur [8 months] born Weston Colville; sisters Ethel [6] and Emily [2] both born in Weston Colville.

1901 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was at Hall Cottages still with his parents, brothers William (farm labourer) and Arthur; sisters Emily and Rosie [5] born Weston Colville.

1911 census...Aged 24, single, a domestic groom, he was still at Hall Cottages with his parents and sister Rosie May. All the siblings survive.

In 1913 he married Annie Elizabeth CLEMENTS [11-1-1889] from Ickleton(Linton Q4-1913), who was recorded by CWGC as living at Church Street, Ickleton.

The pension card records a daughter, Joan Ethel [14-5-1914] at Ickleton, nr Gt Chesterford, Essex.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds when resident in Bartlow. He served less than one year.
The 4th Bedfords were the 2nd Reserve battalion, stationed at Felixstowe in home defence until the disaster of the Somme when they were quickly sent to France, arriving 25th July 1916.
As he died of his wounds/illness at No.2 stationary hospital in Abbeville it is impossible to say, without his Army service records, where or when he was wounded/taken ill. The 4th Bedfords saw heavy action on the Ancre in November 1916 but spent most of December 1916 and early January 1917 training and marching around France.
