Franklyn Heath was born Weston Colville (Linton Q4-1891 3B:515), son of William and Mary HEATH (née NEWMAN).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Lane House, Weston Colville with his father William HEATH Jnr [35] farm labourer; his mother Mary [30]; sister Lillian [8] and brother Hugh [6]. All were born in Weston Colville.

1911 census...Aged 19, farm labourer, he was at 10 Willingham Green, Carlton with his parents, brother Hugh (farm labourer) and sister Ada Elizabeth [8] born Weston Colville.

The family were still at Willingham Green on the pension card.

His brother Hugh was killed 2 months later in France serving in the Suffolk Regiment. see here


He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 8th East Surrey's war diary unfortunately does not specifically locate them but it seems to be in the area of Maricourt :-
"13th.. A quiet morning. Between 3 pm and 5:30 pm in the afternoon the Germans fired about 100 shells and trench mortar bombs of all calibres between MACHINE GUN WOOD on the left of this sector.In view of what happened afterwards, these were probably ranging shots.
At 11:30 pm and intense bombardment of our front line trenches started embracing the whole of A.1 and continuing to the right.
They did not bombard to the left of us. Our Artillery almost immediately opened a very heavy and effective barrage."
